This probably goes without saying, but Jiminy Cricket is the best conscience ever. He’s kind and fun and smart, and he’s also undeniably adorable (which we appreciate in an advice-giver). For those reasons (and all of the reasons below), we wish he was our conscience.
He starts out singing, which automatically means we love him.
He narrates the movie, so he clearly has a handle on the situation.
And he tips his hat to us in the process, which makes him dapper as all get out…
In the beginning of the story, he’s a little less than polished.
Proving that you also can’t judge a sage by its cover.
He’s living proof that being curious and inquisitive can be a good thing. And a cute thing. A very cute thing.
He graciously takes on the role of Pinocchio’s conscience when the Blue Fairy asks.
And he takes to it immediately.
He allows himself a moment to feel really cool and dashing, so you know his advice is legit.
And then he spends the rest of the movie teaching Pinocchio things about the world and how to be good.
Like how “When you get in trouble and you don’t know right from wrong, give a little whistle.” (He also teaches him to whistle, which could come in handy.)
Seriously, did you guys know about the whistle thing?! It blew our minds. It was at that point when we knew Jiminy was the only conscience we’d ever want.
And he has that whole song about wishing upon a star and how it makes no difference who you are. And how anything your heart desires will come to you. And we’re into that.
And in the end (spoiler alert), Pinocchio learns how to be good and Jiminy gets his Official Conscience badge. So that means he’s qualified. Super qualified.
In short, he personifies what the Blue Fairy says a conscience ought to be: Lord High Keeper of the knowledge of right and wrong, counselor in moments of temptation, and guide along the straight and narrow path.
