Inspiration Could Be Just Around the Riverbend

I used to think that music from Disney films should stay with the movies.

I’m a huge Disney fan, don’t get me wrong, but I just didn”t believe that any tune from a “kids’ movie” could be of any use to a girl who was growing up and going to college. But something happened in English 101 that proved me wrong. Toward the end of the semester, my professor had assigned the class with a seemingly simple task. We were to take a poem from our textbook and a song from any musician, and write an essay with four distinct, unrepetitive points, describing how the two spoke of the same idea. I love music, so I waved away the fear that I would struggle with the project. However, as the days passed by, I failed to make any connections! Sadly, I spent many sleepless nights feeling disappointed and frustrated with myself for not being able to summon enough creative juice. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, a Disney miracle happened. I sat straight up in bed as I somehow remembered the song “Just Around the Riverbend” from the Disney classic Pocahontas. I realized with magical joy that the song could very well match with the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, which happened to be in the textbook. I quickly and quietly made four wonderful connections between the two items with plenty of ways to explain why they matched. I turned in my paper that morning, still thrilled about my discovery.Yet, doubts followed my submission. Before I saw my grade for the paper, a sick feeling of dread came over me when I realized that I had actually used a Disney song – a children’s song! – for a college paper. What was I thinking? I was expected to be a mature adult now, after all. Thankfully, my worries quickly dissolved when I saw the bright red “A” on the first page of my returned paper. I suppose my professor must have been a Disney fan too. Needless to say, I now let Disney music follow me wherever I go, no matter how mature I get.
