Early in 2011, I went to Walt Disney World with my mom. She’s an amazing lady who, at 60, has run dozens of Half-Marathons and even a full one. We went as a group with other Brazilian runners and stayed at Disney’s All-Star Music Resort.
Over breakfast I met some of the other athletes and their families. One guy, Marcos, supports the same soccer team as I do back in Brazil and we chatted with him and his girlfriend, Thais. I was thrilled since I got to buy a brand-new camera and became sort of the unofficial photographer of the group.
On the morning of Walt Disney World’s Half-Marathon, I went with Thais and another athlete’s mom to the Cheering Squad Area. It was freezing cold, and we stayed there until everyone that we knew crossed the finish line. Marcos was the first to find us, and as we congratulated him for the achievement, he asked me to take some pictures, which I happily did. He had THAT glint in his eyes and the thought struck me: “he’s going to do it!” Just before he got down on one knee. He took a small box from his pocket and proposed just like that, after running 21 kilometers on that cold January morning. Of course she said yes, crying and laughing at the same time. Later I sent them the pictures I took on that magical, magical, Disney day!
