Santa and Mickey Mouse

My three-year-old nephew is autistic and he absolutely loves Disneyland – or, as he likes to call it, Mick Mouse. Mickey Mouse is his favorite character of all.

One day my sister and I took him to Disneyland and we saw that Santa was in town, so we decided to pay him a visit since we have been teaching my nephew about Santa Claus, elves, reindeer, and Christmas magic. We walked into Elias & Company, a store on California Adventure’s Buena Vista Street, to snap a few pictures with jolly old Saint Nick. In the entrance we met a cute elf named “Tinsel” who walked us over to Santa.

My nephew looked at him, unsure if he should sit down or not, and decided to sit down next to Santa and hold his hand. Santa asked my nephew what he wanted for Christmas this year since he has been a very good boy. My nephew just stared at him and my sister notified Santa that he is autistic. Santa then told him, “That’s okay. I have magical powers that allow me to read minds, and you, my boy, want a toy.” My nephew smiled, and our hearts melted.

At that moment guess who decided to walk through the door? Mickey Mouse himself! My nephew’s head whipped toward the door and with excitement on his face he said “Mouse.” I quickly yelled for Mickey to get in our picture and he did, even though he wasn’t supposed to be there and take pictures. So my nephew got a wonderful photograph of Saint Nick and Mr. Mickey Mouse, with my nephew’s eyes glued on Mickey the whole time. My eyes started watering and I really felt the magic of the holidays.

Thank you, Disneyland, for creating this magical memory for my nephew. This memory will never be forgotten and we will always be thankful. Thank you for everything that you do to make a kid’s life more special.
