With the Show Your Ears Sweepstakes now in full swing, photos of Disney fans donning Mickey ears are flooding into Disney.com. One of these lucky folks will win a trip for four to the Disney Park of their choice, plus some other lovely perks. And until this sweepstakes is over, we all get to enjoy the growing gallery of ear hat photos that span the wide variety of collectible, Mickey-inspired headwear available over the years.
Getting a pair of Mickey Mouse ears embroidered with your name is a rite of passage for many enthusiastic Disney Parks Guests. But how did those now-iconic hats originate? The 1929 animated short Karnival Kid inspired Disney staff artist Roy Williams to create the hat for the cast of the Mickey Mouse Club. It was later replicated by the Benay-Albee Novelty Co. to be sold at Disneyland Park, where it was wildly popular for half a century. Then, for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland Park, product developers shook things up by introducing a line of golden ears — and since then, specially designed ears have been the rage. “We spend a lot of time brainstorming and thinking about some of the incredible events that are coming up, the truly once-in a- lifetime events and think, ‘How do we capture that on an ear hat?’” said Product Developer Megan Kachur. “Whether it’s celebrating the Haunted Mansion or Disneyland’s birthday, we try to tell the story that will resonate with Guests.”
Plus, as a bonus treat, we felt inspired to create a special Disney Ear Hat pattern wallpaper for your computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Below you’ll find a list of common screen sizes and wallpapers made to correspond.
