In Saving Mr. Banks, the never-before-seen story of the making of Mary Poppins coming to theaters this December, Emma Thompson transforms into prickly author P.L. Travers. Director John Lee Hancock explains the inherent difficulties in casting the role, noting that “when you discuss someone to play a complicated character like P.L. Travers, it’s a highwire act and you want someone that has the skillset to be able to accomplish that.” He saw Emma Thompson as the perfect choice for the role from the first casting discussion, knowing right away that she had the ability “to make P.L. Travers a real person.”
For Emma Thompson herself, the part was a chance to explore the author’s many facets. “For an actor, she was a wonderful cast study requiring so many different shades. She just was so complex.” See P.L. Travers and Walt Disney come to life in Saving Mr. Banks this December.
