Friday the 13th is upon us, and that means just one thing – good luck for visitors to Disneyland Resort! That’s because Halloween Time begins today, with fall décor, special events, and spooky happenings throughout Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Parks.
One of the most popular features of Disneyland’s fall festivities is the transformation of Space Mountain into Ghost Galaxy. Guests with the courage to venture into the dark encounter otherworldly manifestations that take an already-thrilling attraction to a whole new level!
Imagineer Steve Roach has worked on Disneyland’s Ghost Galaxy since the beginning. He tells us that Ghost Galaxy actually had its origin in Hong Kong Disneyland. “They started in 2007. Halloween is very big in Hong Kong and they were looking for some new elements for the Halloween season.” For Disneyland Park, Steve’s team took the concept and expanded it in 2009. “But for the most part it is a different show – we have many more ‘encounters’ than they do.”
Spooking up Space Mountain provided a conceptual challenge because, as Steve notes, “you can’t just throw ghosts into space! We had to get creative to find a way to put encounters in and we leave it open to Guests to interpret what they think they saw.” The experience begins with the attraction’s exterior – play close attention to what you see in the queue area, because there are hints there as to what to expect when you blast off.
Ghost Galaxy will only be scaring up business for a few weeks, and then the haunts will disappear until next year.
