“I’m a collector!”
Some state that proudly. Others whisper it, hesitantly, as if confessing they have athlete’s foot. Most Disney collectors are in the “State it proudly” category. Being a Disney collector is easy: there’s a lot to choose from, many different ways to collect it. Disney Treasure Hunters is a new series in which we’re going to take a look at the whole wide wonderful world of Disney collecting, with close up looks at some of the most interesting items–and collectors–we encounter along the way.
One of the hardest things about being a bona fide Disney fan and collector is to find your focus. There’s so much great stuff to choose from, it’s easy to get carried away. At a recent gathering of Disney fans we asked one gal what she collected, and she cheerily replied “Oh, just Mickey Mouse!” Just Mickey Mouse? That only narrows it down to the entire history of Disney merchandise! They very first product licensed by the Disney Company was this writing tablet, from 1930, when Mickey was only two years old. (If you see one of these at a yard sale, snap it up! Or, take a look at this limited edition reproduction on sale at the Disney Store.)
What do we collect here at Disney Insider? We’re pretty focused: This author only collects Haunted Mansion memorabilia. Oh, and pins. And Emperor’s New Groove toys. And 1964 World’s Fair memorabilia, and…okay, I was going to say I just collect “Disney,” but then I remembered my Spider-man comic books, and my Star Wars action figures…
On future editions of Disney Treasure Hunters, we’ll be profiling other collectors and the Disneyana that inspires them. We also want to hear from you, our readers. Sound off in the comments and let us know what you collect. What was the first Disney item you ever owned? If you have a great story about collecting, visit our Submit A Story page and tell us all about it. We look forward to sharing those stories back with you over the coming months.
