Taking MyMagic+ For a Spin at Walt Disney World

On a recent visit the Walt Disney World Resort, we had a chance to test out the features of MyMagic+, and we couldn’t wait to share our findings with you. MyMagic+ is a new system introduced by Disney Parks to help Guests make the most of their Walt Disney World stay. It works in three ways: first, at mydisneyexperience.com, where guests can start planning their vacation from home. Second, Disney FastPass+, which eliminates the need to print out paper FastPasses, allows guests to choose their FastPass rides and times from home. And third, the MagicBand itself: an innovative wristband that ties everything together.

Before our trip to Walt Disney World, we visited mydisneyexperience.com (there’s also an app), to start planning early. We were able to choose the color of our MagicBands+, select three rides that we wanted to FastPass, and add a credit card to our accounts, so that when we got to the parks everything would already be taken care of. We even made reservations to see fireworks and eat at our favorite restaurant. The interactive map provided on the site was really helpful when trying to decide how to plan our days; it helped us make sure things that we wanted to do were close together.

There’s much more to FastPass+ than we thought. After selecting our favorite rides to get FastPasses for (you can do this up to 60 days before your trip, and with lots more rides than before) we changed our minds multiple times. Using the official app, we were able to keep changing our FastPasses (you can choose up to three at a time) until minutes before we actually got on the rides themselves, which allowed for a stress-free, spontaneous day at the Magic Kingdom. Although we could only choose three rides at a time during our time, Parks recently announced that you’ll soon be able to select more FastPasses all at once. Our FastPasses automatically transferred on to our MagicBands, making it impossible for us to loose them and very easy to scan them on the special kiosks in front of all the attractions.

The MagicBands themselves are very user-friendly, and became second nature very quickly during our stay. We got ours as soon as we checked in to our hotel (though you can also get them sent in the mail before you arrive) and they were instantly activated. We used them instead of carrying cash or credit cards to pay for meals and snacks in all the Parks and Resorts, they were our hotel room keys and tickets to get into the Parks, and they also held our FastPasses. The MagicBands were very easy to use, eliminated the need for us to carry around heavy purses, and every cast member we came across was very helpful when showing us how to work them. You can also accessorize your MagicBand, making it specially tailored to you with hundreds of Disney-themed charms.

Overall we were very impressed with MyMagic+. As Tom Staggs (Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts) said, “MyMagic+ is a fantastic new way for our guests to experience even more of the magic of a Walt Disney World vacation.” MyMagic+ will continue to evolve, and we can’t wait to see what features roll out next.
