Mrs. Banks Wore It Well

While Julie Andrews is usually lauded as the runaway star of Mary Poppins, in the fashion world there’s another contender: one Mrs. Banks. With her petticoats (that she lifts in a slightly racy display of sister suffragette-ness), she’s a fashion force to be reckoned with. We got a chance to see her most famous attire on display at the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit during this year’s D23 Expo, and we can assure you that it’s as divine up close as on screen.

Behold:

Mrs. Banks Costume from Mary Poppins

Our observations are as follows:

  1. Periwinkle and yellow should always be together.

  2. Petticoats, petticoats, petticoats. That’s what our lives have been missing.

  3. Ruffles and gloves and ruffles, oh my. But seriously. The ruffles.

  4. A social activist sash is a hard thing to rock, but man does she pull it off.

  5. The cross-chest, slightly drastic buttoning of this coat is a style that should come back immediately.

  6. You go, Glynis Johns.

P.S. Mary Poppins comes to Blu-ray tomorrow, so you can relive Mrs. Banks signature song about “the cause” any time you’d like! Be sure to pre-order your copy.
