We Had Fun Playing With Hair Chalk

There’s something very “Disney” about the whimsical new trend in temporary hair color products. Maybe it’s the mermaids from Peter Pan or the colorful centaurs from Fantasia, but hair chalks and mascaras definitely caught our attention in a magicalkind of way.

There are a lot of different products cropping up out there, so we tried a few in our favorite colors to see how they worked. Some of our learnings:

Bright color for dark hair is not just a wish your heart makes when it’s fast asleep. Without any bleach or lightening, you can achieve the colorful streak of your dreams.

Make sure to deep condition your hair after use, as the chalk tends to dry up your tresses.

Don’t forget that it’s chalk, and will get all over your fingers, clothes, and whatever you happen to lean on.

Sultra Color Hair Mascara in Lapis Blue 1 of 4
Sultra Color Hair Mascara is great for darker hair colors that might not work as well with hair chalks and shadows. With enough layers of application, the blue became nice and bright and lasted all day.
Colorsmash Hair Shadow in So Jaded 2 of 4
This amazing green Colorsmash Hair Shadow worked extremely well on Kathryn's golden hair. More was definitely more with this powder, and it didn't make her hair too stiff and dry after application. The name says it all: simply smash the color on.
Sephora Collection Pastel Hair Chalk in Lilac 3 of 4
Sephora's Pastel Hair Chalk was very easy to apply and worked best on light hair. It had a lovely pinkish-purpleish shade and lasted through the day.
Bumble and Bumble Spraychalk in Lavendar 4 of 4
Bumble and Bumble's Spraychalk was the easiest to apply: simply point and shoot. This also made it easy to color a certain streak of hair. It did leave our hair the most dry out of all the hair chalks, but still worked well even on dark or medium hair, and retained its full purple hue.
